Latter-day Saints in Nairobi join the Digital World

Learning the skills of the future

IBM - Kenya conducted a digital training to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 8th June 2019, at Upperhill Stake Center. Mr. John Matogo from IBM, in charge of University Relations and Digital Nation Africa, East Africa conducted the training. President Darius Mobe, 2nd Counselor of Nairobi -Kenya West was in attendance and presided over the meeting.

In his opening remarks, President Mobe expressed his interest and love for technology.  He encouraged participants to equip themselves with the digital skill sets required in order to expand beyond their borders. “Africa is the next frontier of technology. Demand for digital participation is high in the country and region.”

During the training, Mr. Matogo introduced participants to an IBM program known as Digital Nation Africa which is meant to enable individuals through digital empowerment. The program offers free online digital courses to anyone residing in Africa. The courses offered include coding, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, internet of things, block chain, data science and analytics, cyber security and quantum computing. Digital Nation Africa offers training, certifications, innovative platforms and closes the loop by connecting qualified individuals with opportunities.

'There is soon going to be a disruption of the job landscape. Some jobs will decline, and new ones will emerge. New technology is causing this disruption, hence the need to be acquainted with this technology, take opportunities and be equipped to become productive’’ remarked Mr. Matogo.

Participants were enrolled on the DNA (Digital Nation Africa) program online by following a few quick steps. The program has 3 categories depending on an individual’s level of skill; Explorer, Innovator and New collar.  These categories range from simple content for beginners to more complex content for people looking for opportunities that match their skill sets. Users of the program update their profiles with their qualifications and the system then matches them with opportunities that match their skill sets.

In conclusion, President Mobe expressed his appreciation to the IBM team for making time to carry out the training. He encouraged participants to take up the courses not only for the skills but also to gain opportunities. ‘There is a need for innovation in our market today. Let us start group emails to keep each other updated about the progresses we are making.’’ He thanked Joseph Poche, a Stake Self-Reliance committee member for organizing the event and ensuring its success.
