Plans were discussed for an area Conference for approximately 500 youth between ages 14-18 in Nairobi at the Upperhill meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on January 26-27, 2018. For the Strength of Youth (FSY) is the Church’s program for teaching standards to that age group.

The strategies are underway for a second FSY Conference—the first held in 2014 in Kenya. The theme of the 5-day conference is “Peace in Christ.” Youth will learn and grow together as they participate in classes, devotionals, firesides, and other activities.

At the planning meeting, Elder Mdletshe, Brother and Sister Pezulu, committee leaders, held a training for the FSY committee, consisting of Brother and Sister Onyango as the Logistical Administrators, Brother and Sister Machio as the Session Directors, and Sister Juliet Mukhwana and Brother Benson Arudo as Coordinators.

Later in the day Elder Makasi, Area Seventy, presided over a meeting with Bishops informing them of the upcoming youth conference to be held towards the end of the year and how they can help to make it a success.

Parents were invited on Sunday afternoon to meet with Elder Makasi and his colleagues so that they too could learn what to expect from the conference and encourage their youth to attend. Parents were reminded that only youth that live according to the gospel standards will be able to participate.

Brother Pezulu asked them to encourage their youth to set and work at personal goals so that they can capture the most from the conference. He pointed out that the previous conference changed the lives of many youth and helped them focus on keeping the Saviour in their lives.

As the sessions will be primarily supervised by Young Single Adult (YSA) counsellors, these youth counsellors from both the East and West areas received instruction from Elder Makasi and his colleagues. Elder Mdletshe strongly expressed the importance of being a good example as a key requirement to serving as an FSY youth counsellor. Wards and branches will be informed when registration is set up.
