    Evelyn Jepkemei Receives Presidential Award

    The 2017 International Award for Exceptional Leadership Given to L.D.S Church Member, Evelyn Jepkemei

    Evelyn Jepkemei is a convert who joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2004 in Nairobi, Kenya. She has served the Church in different callings. Currently she serves as Coordinating Council Public Affairs Director for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kenya and Tanzania, a newly organized Church Public Affairs Council system.

        

    Evelyn also works with Research Triangle Institute International (RTI) as a Senior Education Specialist for Kenya’s Tusome early grade literacy program which has transformed literacy in lower grades in public schools. Tusome focuses on developing quality teaching materials for children and training teachers on effective approaches for teaching reading. Sister Jepkemei supervises the implementation of the program in 22 out of 47 counties in Kenya. She is the team lead for the development of Kiswahili materials for Tusome.  She is also an expert in leadership after earning a PhD degree in educational leadership and emotional intelligence.

      

                    

    On December 14th, 2017 she received the RTI Presidential Award in recognition of her “Exceptional leadership, hard work and dedication in support of Tusome Early Grade Reading Program”. Tusome— “Let’s Read” in Swahili was launched in 2015, is now a flagship partnership for Kenya and USAID. This was the second Presidential Award from RTI International after the first which was given to her for her role in successful implementation of the pilot project that led to scaling up of Tusome.

    Evelyn has highlighted the relationship between her job and her faith. “My work means more to me now than just a means to earn a living. I do it to please my Heavenly Father. The gospel (of my Church) has changed the way I relate to others for the better. Though I have had and still have persecution, I have joy that never leaves me. The love I receive from my stake and ward leaders is

    more than riches, for they have loved with the love of the Savior,” she said.
