Three LDS Women Making a Difference in their Communities

Three LDS women making a difference in their communities, Carolyne Ashiano, Oprah Ouma Burton and Suzan Apondi Mwanga come from different places in Kenya and Uganda but they all have a great love for children.

Carolyne Ashiano, Oprah Ouma Burton and Suzan Apondi Mwanga come from different places in Kenya and Uganda. However, the circumstances in their lives are not so different. All three were exposed to the plight of orphans and the uneducated child early in life. Compassion stimulates these women’s approach to daily life. Sharing that compassion with the children in their respective communities is their delight. They understand that children will not remember you so much for the material things you provide but for the feeling that you cherished them. The efforts of these three women have been supplemented by help from individuals in their countries and elsewhere.

Susan Apondi always reminds the people of the village, “If you have something small and see your neighbor in need, it is good to share.”

Carolyne, on the other hand, runs an orphanage and school called Daisy Academy in the Kakamega area. The school caters for 18 orphans and 250 students.

Oprah Ouma Burton began her Eternal Hope Children’s Home in September 2010 with the help of well-wishers who are members of the Church. She started with 12 orphans and currently has 38 between the ages of 4 and 17 years.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints encourages LDS women everywhere to be active in their communities. All members are taught to follow Jesus Christ by doing what he would do. These three woman are great examples of what can be accomplished when they do just that!
