Joyful Day for Johannesburg Temple Journey

A small group of members of Upper Hill Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints set out on a little three-day journey to attend the closest temple to their homes in Nairobi.

A small group of members of Upper Hill Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints set out on a little three-day journey to attend the closest temple to their homes in Nairobi. The group left from Nairobi on January 29, 2018 for Johannesburg, South Africa. This is not a unique traveling group, it happens often, but three of the six leaving on this day, have been saving for ten years to make this trip.

This small group was up before daylight to prepare and gather at the meetinghouse—holding their precious passports, one from the government of Kenya and the other a passport to the Temple from their Church leader.

The sole priesthood member, Anthony Kiema, accompanying the group of sister members, is the son of Jane Kiema. Sister Kiema, and five others filled the van, clutching their documents as they parted for the Jomo International airport.

The journey takes a four-hour flight from Nairobi or a 52-hour drive with friends taking shifts at the wheel. Since the building of a closer temple in Nairobi has been announced, one of 152 temples around the world, members are anxiously preparing for that event.

To members of the Church the temple is a beacon of light. Members consider the temple to be a house of the Lord, a holy place where they can go to find peace and feel closer to God. The sacredness of the temple anciently can be seen in both the Old and New Testaments. They are also the place where the highest sacraments of the faith occur—the marriage of couples and “sealing’ of families for eternity.
