The Clean Water Initiative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints blesses over a million people from all faiths, countries, and ethnicities each year as it helps communities with three pillars of health: clean water sources, improved sanitation facilities, and proper hygiene training. With a heavy emphasis on community participation, the initiative organizes an intricate network of both volunteers and temporary staff. Local and easily-repairable equipment is combined with community donations of time, skills, and materials to create fresh water and latrine systems for communities around the world.

Four schools in Nairobi are the latest beneficiaries of this initiative. The four schools, Joseph Apudo Primary School, St. Esanas Nursery School, Makongeni Primary School and Makongeni Secondary School are located in the Makadara area in Nairobi. They have more than 2000 students. The Church through its humanitarian arm of LDS Charities dug a 238 meter deep bore hole and laid pipes to the four schools in the area. A water kiosk was also constructed in the area where close to 35,000 people can access the water from the area which is mainly composed of rail road housing settlement. The borehole supplies between 6000 and 7000 liters per hour.
October 18, 2013 was the date for the handover ceremony for this project. Members of the water committee from the four schools, parents, school administrators as well as public officials were present. The Hon. Rueben Ndolo, chairman of Athi River Water Board, and the Hon. Imwatuk, county representative, were in attendance and spoke at the ceremony. Students from several classes performed several musical compositions.
